GIA Job Description

The Health Sciences Program in the College of Health Professions is seeking to hire an Instructional Assistant (GIA) for the upcoming Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters. GIA positions are defined by UPPS No. 07.07.06 section 02.01 b. 

A GIA is NOT a teacher of record but is responsible for a specific group of students and assigns some portion of the students’ grades. A GIA is employed by an academic department and assigned to specific courses and faculty members. They are supervised by the instructor of record or laboratory coordinator of the courses assigned. The typical appointment for a GIA is one semester, but with a positive review, the position may be renewed. 

GIAs’ contracts are from 08/16 to 12/31 for the Fall semester and 01/1 to 05/15 for the Spring semester. 

Eligibility Requirements

• Graduate student unconditionally admitted to the University/program. 

• Current graduate student in good academic standing (no probation or suspension) with a minimum 3.00 GPA. 

• Enrolled in at least 9 graduate hours. 

  • GIAs taking more than 12 graduate semester hours during the fall/spring terms must have approval from the dean of The Graduate College. Similarly, GIAs taking more than six graduate semester hours per summer session must have approval from the dean of The Graduate College.

• New international students must have approval from the International Office to work as a GIA. 

Responsibilities

A GIA may be assigned to assist 2-3 faculty members. Duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Taking class attendance 
  • Grading assignments
  • Drafting study guides
  • Organizing and providing study sessions
  • Duplicating handouts and examinations
  • Preparing class materials 
  • Covering classes when faculty are absent 
  • Monitoring/proctoring of exams 
  • Tutoring and communicating with students

Salary and Benefits

GIAs are paid in accordance with the salary schedule in the University Pay Plan (current salary is $1641.84 per month), with payments made on the 1st of each month. Once hired, GIAs qualify for in-state tuition. 

GIAs employed at least half-time (50% FTE) for a minimum period of four and one-half consecutive months, are eligible for employer group insurance plans administered by Human Resources. Allowable Work Hours

During the fall and spring terms, GIAs may work up to 50% full-time equivalent (FTE), or approximately 20 hours per week, spread across roughly four weekdays. Flexibility in office hours scheduling is available to accommodate your course schedule. Additional information can be found in UPPS No. 07.07.06, Section 04.
