Experiences in Medical Laboratory Sciences

The bachelor of science degree with major in medical laboratory science begins with prerequisite requirements during the first two years of study including courses in biology, chemistry and mathematics, along with courses in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences. The junior and senior years combine clinical experiences in the affiliated clinical laboratories with advanced academic study in the clinical laboratory disciplines. The department maintains connections to internship opportunities and professional organizations and is involved in various community service opportunities. Students have the option to participate in Education Abroad or Study in America for global and cultural enrichment. Membership in the major-related student organization or numerous campus organizations is also available for developing peer networks.

Medical Laboratory Science Program Information 

First Degree

Texas State University offers a four-year curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science. The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Graduates are eligible to take the certification examination as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) of the Board of Certification of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) as well at others (such as  AAB).

The prerequisite requirements during the first two years of study include courses in biology, chemistry and mathematics, along with courses in the humanities and social and behavioral sciences. The junior and senior years combine clinical experiences in the affiliated clinical laboratories with advanced academic study in the CLS disciplines.

Students must complete the following five prerequisite courses prior to submitting the MLS application: 

  • BIO 1330/1130
  • BIO 1331/1131 
  • CHEM 1341/1141 
  • CHEM 1342/1142
  • the mathematics course

Students may only have a maximum of the nine remaining prerequisite hours, with no remaining credit hours in prerequisite science and mathematics courses prior to beginning the MLS Program. While students are encouraged to complete all prerequisite courses prior to admission, the MLS course sequence only offers 10 hours in the first fall semester and 11 hours in the first spring semester. Thus, students requiring 12 hours for full-time status in the first year of our program will need to save two liberal arts courses to meet this 12-hour requirement. Financial aid will only pay for classes required to get the MLS degree. Please contact the College of Health Professions Advising Office (512-245-3506) or Financial Aid office if you have questions.

Since class size is limited due to the availability of space in the clinical affiliates, admission to the MLS Program is competitive and not guaranteed.

Second Degree

Students with a baccalaureate degree may start the MLS course sequence in the program if they have been accepted into the program and completed the prerequisite courses identified by our accrediting organization. These include twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, including organic chemistry OR Anatomy and Physiology and twelve (12) semester hours of biological science, including a course in microbiology. The organic chemistry and/or anatomy & physiology and microbiology courses must have been taken within the past six years. Post-baccalaureate students will take the two-year sequence of professional courses along with any other prerequisite courses which they might not have completed in their first degree.

    1. Gain clinical exposure and practice of skills and theory learned in the previous clinical laboratory science courses in a general laboratory setting.
    2. Relate the demands and responsibilities and duties of the MLS and other staff in a general service laboratory.
    3. Observe basic management and supervision skills practiced in a general service laboratory.
    4. Perform selected management procedures as directed by the laboratory manager.
    5. Learn flexibility by adapting to different expectations and styles of laboratory management and supervision practices.
    6. Develop independent and interdependent work skills by assuming responsibility for own work and work area and working closely with others.
    7. Perform selected test procedures in all areas of the laboratory.
    8. Perform and report urinalysis to include chemical, physical and microscopic characteristics.
    9. Perform and report CBC to include differential and histogram evaluation.
    10. Perform and report PT and APTT tests and other hemostasis tests as available.
    11. Perform and report routine chemistry tests using appropriate instrumentation.
    12. Perform blood collections as directed.
    13. Observe, and perform as appropriate, routine maintenance on lab instruments and equipment.
    14. Participate in quality assurance practices as directed.

     PHLEBOTOMY (if applicable at your facility)

    Following didactic instruction and student laboratory practice, the MLS student will demonstrate proficiency as follows in a clinical situation:

    1. Demonstrate patient identification procedure and specimen labeling without error.
      1. Properly identify patients. Label tubes completely and legibly, initial request forms, and clock-in specimens as required.
      2. Explain procedure for special collections, STAT specimens, and times collections.
    2. Effectively use several types of blood drawing equipment including vacutainers, syringes, microcontainers, microlance, and other collecting systems.
      1. Demonstrate correct venipuncture technique using syringes and vacutainers.
      2. Demonstrate correct skin preparation and puncture techniques for:
        1. Newborns-chemistry specimens, hematology specimens, blood gases, blood cultures, bleeding times.
        2. Other patients- capillary punctures, venipuncture, blood cultures, special testing ( i.e. blood alcohol)
    3. Identify specimen collection problems, i.e. insufficient blood ratio to anticoagulant, hemoconcentration, I.V. contamination, heparin lock, etc.
    4. Explain the action of anticoagulants used in specimen collection.
      1. Explain the procedures for handling tubes with anticoagulants and/or other additives, and list the proper color-coded stoppers and capillary tubes used for routine tests.
    5. Accurately collect appropriate specimens for tests ordered and transported to the laboratory within the appropriate time limits.
      1. Keep collection tray stocked, neat, and clean.
      2. Utilize collection trays in the prescribed manner.
      3. Display efficiency in routine blood collection and delivery to the laboratory.
      4. Perform venous and capillary collections as directed by laboratory personnel.
    6. Display professional behavior and attitude toward patients, personnel, and visitors.
    7. Demonstrate a confident manner, consideration for patients, and cooperation with the medical staff and nursing personnel.
    8. Demonstrate proper procedure for collecting specimens under all conditions, including emergencies, STATS, isolation, interfering I.V.’s, timed tests, etc.
    9. Demonstrate understanding and compliance with patient isolation procedures.
    10. Demonstrate proper procedure for handling hazardous specimens and blood collection apparatus.
    11. Demonstrate knowledge of significant vascular anatomy.
    12.  Determine the effects of various I.V lines, heparin lock, etc., on certain laboratory tests.
    13. The student will observe all ethical standards of the profession regarding the treatment of patients.

    EXPECTATIONS:

    • Review the objectives for the General Laboratory rotation before you go on the rotation (and, it doesn’t hurt to take them with you to check off what you’ve done or haven’t done).
    • Take your Clinical Chemistry and Hematology textbooks with you and use them when you’re looking up information about specific tests; have a notebook handy to jot down important things so you don’t have to be told more than once
    • This rotation will expose you to several areas of the clinical laboratory and include phlebotomy. If you haven’t reviewed phlebotomy techniques, take a look at the Medtraining programs. The urinalysis and peripheral blood programs are also helpful for this rotation.
    • If you haven’t notified your rotation site, be sure to do so early to let them know you are coming and to find out what time you are to be there, where to park, clothing, and any other concerns you have.
    • Be ON TIME, wear your scrubs if you have them (you can also take a lab coat, but many places will provide that), take your student TX State name tag, student handbook/review book, notify your lab contact and us if you are not going to make it because of sickness, emergency, etc.
    • ON THE JOB-Observe universal precautions at all times; be attentive and proactive in your learning; ask if you don’t understand something but try not to “nag” (in other words, you shouldn’t have to ask “does this test require serum or plasma” 5 times); Show interest and enthusiasm; do not get caught up in lab/office politics/personnel feuds/etc.
    • Every clinical site is a little different; try to be intuitive with the “workflow” and culture of the lab; you only have an opportunity to be there 3 weeks so try to fit in
    • This is YOUR opportunity to network with future employers and all of our sites communicate with each other about you and your peers….so, treat this like a 3-week interview!
    • Learn from the different MLS and MLT professionals that you are around. Many of them have years of practical experience and “tricks of the trade” that are hard to show in a teaching lab on campus.
    • Do not be afraid of repetition. The more experience you have with chemistry instrumentation and evaluating quality control data, the better. This is important. It will help you on your rotation exam and on your certification exam.

    OBJECTIVES:

    After completion of coursework and this clinical experience, the MLS student will be able to:

    1. Correlate labeled specimen with accompanying requisition slip, determine if the specimen is acceptable is acceptable or unacceptable, and decide what specific media needs to be used for primary isolation.
    2. Select appropriate media, inoculate properly, and incubate in appropriate manner.
    3. Process correctly all paperwork accompanying incoming specimens; if available, using a computer-managed data system.
    4. Discuss which microorganisms are considered normal flora and under what circumstances.
    5. Discuss which microorganisms are considered potential pathogens.
    6. Discuss which microorganisms are considered obligate pathogens.
    7. Discuss the uses and limitations of gram stain evaluation of clinical specimens.
    8. Describe the various approaches and methodologies employed in processing clinical specimens.
    9. Prepare and stain direct smears (gram and methylene blue) and wet preps (KOH, India ink, Trich. smear, etc.) of sufficient quality to yield appropriate information.
    10. Demonstrate the ability to recognize cells and microorganisms on direct smears and wet preps.
    11. Recognize hyphae, pseudohyphae, yeast, and other fungal elements using Lactophenol Cotton Blue, Calcofluor, and KOH preparations.
    12. Recognize Trichomoniasis sp. in a wet prep.
    13. Perform a colony count on urine cultures and calculate the number of organisms per mL.
    14. Properly perform various rapid biomechanical tests commonly used in the microbiology lab such as catalase, coagulase, Strep. grouping, oxidase, nitrate reduction, motility, spot indole, and serological typing to aid in the identification of an organism and recognize when each tests needs to be done.
    15. Identify enteric bacteria on primary plate media and use rapid identification (automated) for identification.
    16. Distinguish between Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphyloccus aureus by using coagulase test, and Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus by using Novobiocin susceptibility test.
    17. Recognize an organism on plate media and recall tests necessary to accurately identify organism.
    18. Properly perform the Kirby-Bauer antimicrobial susceptibility test if available.
    19. Use the germ tube procedure and sucrose assimilation tests to differentiate Candida albicans from other Candida species if available.
    20. Perform wet prep and concentration technique for O & P on stool specimen.
    21. Observe and identify Pneumocystis carinii organisms if available.
    22. Perform the Formalin-Ether (sodium acetate) sedimentation concentration procedure (or equivalent concentration technique) for the identification of parasitic organisms.
    23. Perform latex agglutination tests for bacterial antigens (meningitis, cryptococcal, etc.)
    24. Identify Clostridium difficile by serologic methods.
    25. Proficiently stain smears of Mycobacteria by the carbolfuchsin stain and the fluorochrome stain and recognize organisms by these staining methods.
    26. Process specimens for decontamination and concentration of Mycobacteria.
    27. Use the niacin, nitrate 68o catalase, arylsulfatase tests to identify the commonly isolated Mycobacteria species if available.
    28. Set up blood cultures and perform follow-up examinations.
    29. Perform anaerobic culture methods.
    30. Perform a spinal fluid cell count, Gram stain, India ink preparation on cerebrospinal fluid if available.
    31. Perform gross examination and occult blood tests on stool specimens if performed by this department,
    32. Record patient’s test data in appropriate specimen acquisition log. Maintain department quality control records and other quality assurance practices.
    33. Recognize and observe safety procedures in the microbiology laboratory at all times.
    34. When given an unknown specimen, use the proper method of isolation, and accurately identify the microorganism(s).
    35. Perform an MIC or determine break point values on selected antimicrobial drugs.
    36. Use computer assisted data management system(s) for the speciation of microorganisms, MIC of antimicrobials, and epidemiology surveillance of noscocomial microorganisms.
    37. Perform rapid molecular testing (FDA approved) of certain microorganisms ( i.e. DNA probe from Gen-Probe and Nucleic acid amplification test-ligase chain reaction (LCR) from Abbott for Neisseria gonorrhoea or qPCR for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

    EXPECTATIONS:

    • Review the objectives for the clinical microbiology rotation before you go on the rotation (and, it doesn’t hurt to take them with you to check off what you’ve done or haven’t done).
    • Perform the Gram stain review on Medtraining (if you take the time to do the clinical gram stain in entirety, you will find it offers a nice prep); it also wouldn’t hurt to review some basic bacterial groups like Staph versus  Strep/Enterococcus, Enterics, non-fermentative gram negative bacilli, Neisseria, and the anaerobes (again, you don’t want to cram this all in one day but continually review while you are on the rotation)
    • If you haven’t notified your rotation site, be sure to do so today to let them know you are coming and to find out what time you are to be there, where to park, clothing, and any other concerns you have.
    • Be ON TIME, wear your scrubs if you have them (you can also take a lab coat, but many places will provide that), take your student TX State name tag, student handbook/review book, notify your lab contact and us if you are not going to make it because of sickness, emergency, etc.
    • ON THE JOB-Observe universal precautions at all times; be attentive and proactive in your learning; ask if you don’t understand something but try not to “nag” (in other words, you shouldn’t have to ask how to do the gram stain five times in the first hour); show interest and enthusiasm; do not get caught up in lab/office politics/personnel feuds/etc.

  • Hematology/Coagulation Clinical Rotation

    After completion of coursework and this clinical experience, the MLS student will be able to:

    1. Record patient test data in appropriate logs; if available, use a computer-managed data system.
    2. Prepare thin blood smears with feathered edges and evenly distribute cells.
    3. Accurately identify and classify white blood cells, estimate the number and quality of platelets, identify normal and abnormal blood cell morphology on a Wright’s stained blood smear.
    4. Follow written procedures and accurately perform and interpret the following tests:
      1. Set up and read an ESR
      2. Dilute, charge hemacytometer, count, and classify the white blood cells of a spinal fluid and other body fluids
      3. Differential on cerebrospinal fluid and other body fluids
      4. Prothrombin time
      5. Activated partial thromboplastin time
      6. Quantitative fibrinogen
      7. D-dimer
    5. Operate the following instruments and obtain accurate results:
      1. Automated slide stainer, if available
      2. Automated hematology analyzer
      3. Automated coagulation analyzer
    6. Perform routine cleaning, start-up, and shut down procedures on an automated hematology analyzer(s).
    7. Discuss the calibration procedures(s) for automated hematology analyzer(s).
    8. Observe bone marrow aspiration/biopsy procedure is available.
    9. Correlate and evaluate hematology and coagulation test results with other clinical findings when appropriate, with other laboratory data.
    10. Observe proper security precautions involving confidential patient information.
    11. Develop skills in computer assisted data management systems as applied to the department.
    12. Observe and participate in quality assurance practices of the department.

    * If test(s) not ordered within rotation period or not a routine procedure, the clinical instructor will review the procedure with the student pointing out special requirements, pitfalls, and method of reporting results.

    • If you haven’t notified your rotation site, be sure to do so early to let them know you are coming and to find out what time you are to be there, where to park, clothing, and any other concerns you have.
    • Be ON TIME, wear your scrubs if you have them (you can also take a lab coat, but many places will provide that), take your student TX State name tag, student handbook/review book, notify your lab contact and us if you are not going to make it because of sickness, emergency, etc.

    EXPECTATIONS:

    • Review the objectives for the Clinical Chemistry rotation before you go on the rotation (and, it doesn’t hurt to take them with you to check off what you’ve done or haven’t done).
    • Take your Clinical Chemistry textbook with you and use it when you’re looking up information about specific tests; have a notebook handy to jot down important things so you don’t have to be told more than once.
    • If you haven’t notified your rotation site, be sure to do so early to let them know you are coming and to find out what time you are to be there, where to park, clothing, and any other concerns you have.
    • Be ON TIME, wear your scrubs if you have them (you can also take a lab coat, but many places will provide that), take your student TX State name tag, student handbook/review book, notify your lab contact and us if you are not going to make it because of sickness, emergency, etc.
    • ON THE JOB-Observe universal precautions at all times; be attentive and proactive in your learning; ask if you don’t understand something but try not to “nag” (in other words, you shouldn’t have to ask “does this test require serum or plasma” 5 times); show interest and enthusiasm; do not get caught up in lab/office politics/personnel feuds/etc.
    • Every clinical site is a little different; try to be intuitive with the “workflow” and culture of the lab; you only have an opportunity to be there 3 weeks so try to fit in.
    • This is YOUR opportunity to network with future employers and all of our sites communicate with each other about you and your peers….so, treat this like a 3-week interview!
    • Learn from the different MLS and MLT professionals that you are around. Many of them have years of practical experience and “tricks of the trade” that are hard to show in a teaching lab on campus.
    • Do not be afraid of repetition. The more experience you have with chemistry instrumentation and evaluating quality control data, the better. This is important. It will help you on your rotation exam and on your certification exam.
    • Stay for the entire “shift”; be courteous and grateful to our clinical sites as we rely on them for future rotation; YOU are representing not only yourself but TEXAS STATE and the MLS program.

      What’s In a Name?
      Travis County Medical Society Blood Bank was a nonprofit organization founded in September 24, 1951 as the first nonprofit blood bank serving the greater Austin area. The Travis County Medical Society founded us with a mission that remains strong today: to serve and protect the Central Texas blood supply. Initially, we served four Austin hospitals – Brackenridge, Seton, Holy Cross, and St. David’s – along with a few rural hospitals in the surrounding areas. In the 1970s, we made moves! We relocated to our current building on North Lamar and adopted a new name, “Central Texas Regional Blood Center.” Additionally, we expanded our reach to 10 counties, which we continue to serve today. Over the next few decades, we grew to over 100 employees, implemented a new computer system, expanded our North Lamar donor center, and added more brick and mortar locations. Before adopting our current name, we underwent one more name change in 2000, “The Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas.” While these previous names effectively captured the organization’s purpose, they lacked the essence of who we are. 

      Why We Are Blood? We are who we are because of the people of Central Texas – our neighbors, friends, and family.

      Our staff, volunteers, and donors come from diverse backgrounds, yet we are all united. Like family, each of us plays an important role in ensuring our mission is fulfilled. We donate and draw blood, coordinate blood drives, support first responders, work in and with hospitals, volunteer our time, and some of us even have loved ones who are recipients of blood. Blood connections run deep. When you call someone “blood,” it’s another way to call that person “family.” This colloquialism stuck with us and was part of the inspiration for our name today, We Are Blood. Regardless of the roles we play, our common bond through it all is protecting the community blood supply and saving lives locally. Central Texas is home. As we continue to grow and flourish with the community, we remain steadfast to our mission. As the nonprofit blood center, we proudly and exclusively serve over 50 hospitals, medical facilities, and agencies in our 10-county area.
