How do we plan our next steps as we progress through our degrees?
Major Maps are good references that offer suggestions about what to do each year to develop academically, socially, practically and professionally.
If you are interested in connecting with your community or joining a student organization to help with your academic or career goals, check out the Bobcat Organization Hub.
For questions about completing your degree, you can message your assigned advisor directly or schedule appointments with them through Navigate TXST. Most Health Professions students will have an assigned advisor in our office, but if you don't, you can receive help from any of our advisors. You can also submit an Ask an Advisor form if you have a quick question for our office.
-
Do we need a communications class for the nursing major?
If you are currently attending Texas State, you will likely take COMM 1310 as part of your core requirements for your degree. If you think you have already taken a class that fulfilled that requirement, you can reach out to your advisor to confirm.
-
When does the registration open for Spring 2027?
The first day of registration is October 21st, but everyone will have assigned days and times for when they will be able to start registering, called their “time ticket.”
-
Do we need MU 2313 for nursing?
MU 2313 satisfies the Creative Arts (core 050) requirement for bachelor's degrees in Texas. There are other core 050-coded courses that would fulfill that requirement, but you do need to take one of them as a prerequisite to St. David's BSN program.
-
Should I worry about doing volunteering work or getting a healthcare job so my resume can stand out?
It depends on what program you're wanting to apply for. Radiation Therapy requires observation hours as part of the program application. Other programs don't require it, but additional experience might help you stand out as an applicant. Volunteering or shadowing within a healthcare setting can also show you what the day-to-day responsibilities might be in various professions.
-
Where do we look for to find volunteer work and experiences like that?
There are student organizations, like the Pre-Nursing and Pre-Radiation Therapy organizations, that might be able to help you locate opportunities. If you need ideas, you can refer to Texas State's Major Maps for suggested extracurriculars for your degree path. You can use Career Services to help plan and prepare, or visit Community Service Opportunities to check if there are any featured options that interest you.
-
Can pre-nursing students study abroad and still stay on track with their prerequisite classes?
It is possible on a case-by-case basis. A lot depends on which program a student wants to participate in and which courses they have left to complete in their degree plan. It is important to plan ahead if you are interested, especially when you have to coordinate with program applications and timelines. Start by attending one of the Education Abroad General Information Sessions and review details on their website about the programs being offered in the future.
-
Is study abroad available for international students?
If you are interested in study abroad, we recommend attending an Education Abroad General Information Session to explore program offerings and requirements. We also recommend reaching out to International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) to discuss your specific situation and which programs you would be able to participate in.

How can we find out the requirements for applying to our major programs?
You can see program requirements, like prerequisites and minimum GPA, by looking at your degree audit and the program's website. When you meet with your advisor, they will show you how to interpret your audit accurately and write a follow-up report that includes a summary of major/program requirements.
-
Where can I find my degree audit and registration system?
Both your degree audit and the registration system can be accessed through Texas State Self Service.
“My Student Degree Audit” will take you to your degree audit.
“My Registration & Planning,” then “Register or Change Schedule” will take you to the registration system.

-
What if I tested out of a biology class through AP testing? How would that affect my GPA?
If you received credit for an AP exam, it doesn't help or harm your GPA. It basically gives you a checkmark saying that course is completed. Only letter grades will calculate into your GPA.
-
Are the A&P I and II labs included in the class when you add it into your schedule?
For Anatomy & Physiology I, II, and Microbiology, you will have to register for the lecture and the lab at the same time. The labs are required for all three of those courses.
-
I already took Anatomy 1 with Lone Star College in high school, should I take Anatomy 2 with Lone Star as well?
It’s up to you. A lot of the time they do like to see both A&P’s taken at the same institution, but if your Anatomy & Physiology I course is equivalent to TXST’s BIO 2451, you could take Anatomy & Physiology II here at Texas State instead.
-
How hard is it to work a part-time job while in the nursing school?
The BSN program is full-time with clinicals. St. David's recommends prioritizing the program, as there is little time between course work, clinicals, and other program activities. If admitted to the program, you are welcome to discuss it further with the School of Nursing.
-
How many prerequisites can still be remaining when applying?
At the time of your application submission, you can have no more than 18 credit hours remaining of prerequisites and core curriculum to complete over that next spring and summer before starting the program. Three of the five sciences must be completed at the time of your application submission as well.
-
I came in with an associate's degree and most of my prerequisites done, but I am missing 3 science prerequisites. What would the application process look like?
At the application submission time, they want to see at least three of your five sciences complete. If you are not meeting that major requirement by the end of this fall semester, it is not guaranteed that they will review your application if you choose to submit it.
-
I asked about the MSN track in my RSVP questions, is there anyway y'all can touch on how that looks?
Health Professions Advising doesn't advise for graduate programs, so you would need to reach out to the Graduate College directly or visit TXST Graduate Programs to review information about the available MSN programs at Texas State.
-
I have AP credit for both Functional Biology and General Chemistry, but I heard that TXST only accepts one of them. Is this true?
Yes, it is true. The School of Nursing only accepts CR credit for one, not both. So, you would have to pick one of them to take at the college level to receive a letter grade.
-
If I take A&P I in the Spring, can I take A&P II in the Summer?
Yes, absolutely.
-
So let's say you end up applying and not getting accepted into the program, does that mean you are then required to continue the Health Sciences path or would you essentially have to take a gap year?
That is up to you. If you want to reapply the next year, you can use that time to make yourself a more competitive applicant (ex. work on raising your TEAS score and/or your science or prerequisite GPA). You could also use that time to complete a minor, which would follow you into the program, or work toward completing Health Sciences degree requirements.
-
Do y'all happen to know which nursing schools closely match TXST’s nursing school prerequisites so we can apply as a backup?
While we to encourage students to apply to multiple nursing programs, we can only advise for Texas State's program. Ultimately, it will be up to students to research and reach out to the other programs to learn about their requirements and expectations. Texas Board of Nursing is a good resource to find other accredited programs in the state.
-
Is ethics a required course to apply to the nursing school?
PHIL 1320 (Ethics and Society) is a required course to meet the core 040 requirement for pre-nursing. If you transferred to Texas State with the core 040 requirement already satisfied, you do not need to take PHIL 1320.
-
Do we need to have clinical or volunteer hours on our resume when applying to the program?
It is not required, but any additional leadership or healthcare-related experience you can include will strengthen your application.
The St. David's School of Nursing website explains further:
The St. David’s School of Nursing utilizes a holistic admission process that considers the unique experiences, achievements, and strengths each applicant brings to the profession. While not required, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit supporting documentation that highlights experiences and accomplishments that may not be fully reflected through academic metrics alone.
Professional experience, leadership roles, healthcare certifications, military service, volunteer work, and significant life experiences can demonstrate qualities that contribute to success in nursing, including resilience, compassion, communication skills, and a commitment to serving others.
