What is a Healthcare Administrator, and what are its technical requirements?

Medical and health services managers plan, direct, and coordinate the business activities of healthcare providers (BLS.gov). A healthcare administrator is involved with the daily operations of a medical facility, particularly staffing, efficiency and finance. If you pursue the career path in healthcare administration, you could work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, nursing homes and outpatient clinics.

Healthcare is growing at a faster rate than most industries. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that healthcare employment will grow 32% from 2020 to 2030, creating about 139,600 new jobs.

Technical requirements for this role are aligned with the Health Leadership Alliance and the American College of Healthcare Executives. The 24 competencies and professional certifications integrated into our programs at the School of Health Administration are directly aligned with these organizations. The requisite skills needed to be successful include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Knowledge of healthcare laws and regulations
  • Leadership skills
  • Technological proficiency
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Communication skills
  • Adaptability
  • Business expertise

Our programs are CAHME and AUPHA accredited and have won national acclaim.
